Kay Maldonado

Student, Duke University

One of our board members, Garrett Maples, had this to say about our scholarship recipient:

"Kay Maldonado was chosen as a scholarship recipient due to her unique brand of authenticity and unabashed clarity as to how she will help pull others up around her to have a seat at the table.

Kay sits comfortably in the top ten at KIPP Austin Brave High School with an admirable commitment to making the most of her academic experience - 6 AP courses, early college classes, and a 3.91 GPA. The drive doesn't stop there. Outside of the classroom, she has invested in leadership positions across both the basketball and soccer teams while still finding time to help fundraise $20,000 for an eye-opening expedition to Vietnam. And just in case there were any doubts about her independence and work ethic, she has continuously held a part-time job since she was 16.

Kay's stand-out feature that could not go unnoticed by the EGS selection committee was her excitement to lead by example. Her vision is rooted in the ability to set a precedent that will make it easier for the next person, and the next. From overcoming (and thriving through) several distinct instances of misogyny and racism and looking out for sisters and friends throughout it all, Kay wants  to give a voice to the voiceless; To empower those around her to break stereotypes and find their own success. She truly embodies the heart, purpose, and soul of EGS.

Kay will be attending Duke University next fall majoring in government to begin her studies to become a lawyer.

The Envisioning Greater Success Foundation is pleased to offer her a $2,000 award for her accomplishments.
